Genre: Adventure Summary: Mysteries abound surrounding the royal family, poisoned years before and leaving a kingdom bereft of rulers. Mystery coiled thickest around the youngest, Prince Jaron, who had been the biggest, most stubborn troublemaker of the castle, quick to shout out witty, irreverent one-liners but sporting a heart of gold. Before his family's murder, he had been sent away for his misdemeanors and for years has been presumed dead due to a pirate attack on his ship in the harbor. But all that can change in an instant. Because no one has ever recovered his body, if one could present a convincing candidate for the return of Prince Jaron, one could be linked to the ruler of a kingdom. This is where Sable comes in. A mischievous orphan, he is sharp-tounged, spirited, stubborn, and world-weary, with a healthy dose of righteous anger. When a devious nobleman comes to his orphanage, he is forced into lessons with two other boys designed to turn them into Prince Jaron, where only the best can ascend and become King. Other: To be honest, I loved this series. The romance was somewhat awkward and, I felt, poorly written. However, that aside, the wittiness, ingenuity, and characters really did make the book. The main character has a great story arc, and you can see his development throughout, cheering for him at crucial moments. The side characters and their interactions with the main are also fun and, at times, rather poignant. There are battles to be aware of, and people do get hurt. It was a fun, exciting ride. Highly recommended. (Ages 10+) ~Amy |
